Each year, our owner chooses a company motto that highlights a value we want to lead with. It puts words to what matters most in this season of our business and the kind of company we strive to be. We love the power of a simple phrase to capture intention, spark conversation, and keep us grounded in what counts. Our annual motto gives us a shared language for the year ahead and the experiences we want to create. This year’s theme sets the tone—here’s what it means for us.

Rafferty Solutions Company Motto: 2025
"You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."
-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Starting something new—or asking for help—can feel intimidating. Especially as a business owner, it’s easy to get stuck waiting until you see the whole plan, until every detail is figured out, until you feel 100% certain that it will work.
But the truth? You rarely, if ever, have all the answers before you start. This year I wanted to combat that block for prospective clients that hold them back from getting help and leaning into the fact that it's okay to come to us with a blank stare and let us draw a first draft.
The Myth of “Knowing It All”
So many business owners stall because they feel like they need the perfect blueprint before saying yes to help, launching a new project, or delegating tasks.
“I don't know what I can pass off so maybe I'll just keep it all."
“Everything is a mess, I don't know where to tell you to start."
“I need to look confident and perfect, but I won't have all the answers."
"I don't know what to do or how to articulate what I need to fix my systems."
All of these thoughts are normal—but they can also keep you standing at the bottom of the staircase, frozen in place, instead of climbing forward.
The reality is, waiting until everything is perfectly clear only delays growth, learning, and progress.
Taking the First Step
Taking the first step doesn’t mean you have to have the entire path mapped out. It means starting with what you do know, taking action, and being willing to adjust as you go. The staircase doesn’t have to be perfectly visible from the bottom—it ebbs, flows, and changes as you move forward.
Saying yes to help, asking for guidance, or delegating tasks doesn’t make you weak—it makes you smart. It’s choosing progress over perfection.
The Power of Partnering with Experts
This is where having the right support—like a virtual assistant agency—can make all the difference. When you bring someone in who has the experience, tools, and systems to guide you:
You don’t need to figure it all out alone
You don’t need to stress over every possible outcome
You can start moving forward, step by step, with confidence
Your assistant helps you take the first step—and the next, and the next—while creating the structure and process that keeps you climbing. You may not see the whole staircase yet, but you’re on it, and that’s what matters.
Action Over Anxiety
Climbing a staircase one step at a time beats standing still in fear every time. The first step isn’t just a small act—it’s a commitment to forward motion. It’s a decision to trust yourself, trust your team, and trust the process.
It’s okay to be uncertain. It’s okay to ask for help. It’s okay if the path shifts along the way. What matters is that you start, that you move, and that you keep climbing.
Start Moving
Whether it’s hiring help for the first time, saying yes to a new opportunity, or delegating a task you’ve been holding onto, taking the first step is where growth begins.
You don’t need to see where the staircase leads or even where it ends. You just need to step forward.
